It seems like technology is headed for a massive telephone change over. The traditional Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) is looking to be replaced by VoIP. VoIP is short for Voice over IP. VoIP is the routing of conversations over an IP network or the Internet. VoIP uses a packet-switched network instead of the circuit-switched voice transmission lines used by traditional telephone networks. VoIP does not need an Internet connection to work. A company that has a LAN connection with all of its computers can utilize VoIP technology.

VoIP is a great technology, but has a variety of issues with implementation. VoIP may face problems with latency because IPs do not provide Quality of Service guarantees, nor do they provide their packets of information in sequential order. High-speed Internet connections are required for VoIP and firewalls often prove tricky for VoIP technology. To combat this, many people use Session Border Controllers (SBC).

VoIP technology has many advantages. There are more new features with VoIP because of the lack of an International Telecommunications Union. VoIP is still very much an open market for developers, so the technology is constantly being improved. VoIP also has a lower cost than traditional sources because of the monopolies that exist or traditional phone companies being controlled by the government. Some users even see VoIP phone calls as free because they do not have to pay extra for the service. The user only pays the Internet service provider, and therefore the usage of VoIP seems to be free. You can also take your VoIP phone wherever you go because all you need is a network connection to make it work. VoIP technology will also benefit network agents who work for call centers. Agents can help callers from anywhere in the country with an Internet connection. Finally, because VoIP is on the computer, there is increased functionality. Conference calls can be held, information can be sent, and things like address books can be updated and shared over VoIP.

While VoIP has many advantages, there are a few drawbacks to the service. One of the biggest drawbacks is reliability. Telephone lines have back up generators in case of power outages, so phones can keep working. Because VoIP is connected to the Internet, a power outage will end a VoIP call when the computer shuts down. To combat this, users must buy an expensive uninterruptible power supply or a generator that must then be installed on the premises. Internet connections are also subject to disconnection, depending on crowded networks, and the quality of the ISP. If the Internet connection drops, then the VoIP call will be dropped. VoIP is also a problem for emergency calls. Because of the nature of the Internet and VoIP systems, emergency workers cannot trace calls. In the event that someone with an emergency has a problem but is unable to give an address, the emergency worker will not be able to trace the call and find the person. VoIP carriers are already attempting to fix this problem by implementing a technical work-around. Finally, it will be very difficult to integrate VoIP on a massive scale, because while the standard Plain Old Telephone System (POTS) has a common standard, VoIP does not.

VoIP has many advantages as well as some large drawbacks. The main roadblock in the way of global VoIP adoption is reliability. When VoIP proves that it can be just as reliable as traditional telephone services have been over many years, then it will start to be adopted. VoIP technology is always improving, so the problems with VoIP today are likely to be solved sooner than many people expect. VoIP can truly revolutionize both the business world and home life.

Mike Schuda is fascinated by new technologies and writes for VoIP Lowdown ( http://www.voiplowdown.com ).

Customer Reviews

Review date : 2008-08-06
We purchased this phone in Februrary ‘08, & over the last six months have been pleased. We live aboard a sailboat in the Caribbean, & Skype is the only good (cheap reliable) calling option. The phone seems to be as good as the internet connection. Sometimes excellent; other times not so. The battery is fine for our sometimes hour-long calls with plenty of juice left. What I don’t get is why the price has gone up so much. We paid $119 with free shipping. It’s worth that much. For $259, get a headset & use the computer! Not worth the expense.

Review date : 2008-08-05
I would not reccommend buying this product. It is a big pain to use this device. Frequent drop calls, no outgoing caller ID are few problems I faced!!!

Review date : 2008-08-01
I bought this product about a month ago. It’s useful while working around the house with a wireless broadband connection, however, it’s not that useful while away from your base.
It works on "open" wireless networks but not "free" wireless networks. Some wireless connections, such as those at McDonalds, are free. You can use a laptop to tap into the system easily but you can’t use the IPhone to log in. Battery life is OK. Talk time is 2 hours and standby time is about 20 hours before charging.

Review date : 2008-07-24
I received this product in just two days with Amazon Prime. Five minutes later I was talkingo my daughter in England, skype to skype. Setup was incredibly easy, just follow to phone prompts. I did not need to load software on my computer. Sound quality was good - much better than that coming from my laptop speakers. Calling skype to skype is so easy. Skype-out works great too… just dial " 1" then the area code and phone number. Range is decent, work wherever my signal reaches. It does have speakerphone which is only fair. Overall, this phone works much better than the ratings lead me to believe. I just may buy another!

Review date : 2008-06-10
I will not get into all of the complaints listed in the other reviews — each of which is more or less relevant depending on your needs and expectations.

I was EXTREMELY disappointed with the sporadic and inconsistent manner in which it was able to connect to wireless networks…. that is, it connects perfectly in certain places and does not connect AT ALL in other places.

You CANNOT depend on this device to connect to any wireless network… whether you have the appropriate security keys or not.

If you don’t have a Linksys router where you intend to use this phone, you are taking a chance when you buy it. The good news is that it is extremely easy to return to Amazaon.

It’s a shame really… because when it works… it works well.

I have written several articles concerning VoIP. I personally use a VoIP company called Broadvox, who has since merged with another VoIP company and is no longer available as Broadvox. I have used VoIP for a year now and I have to say I am still thoroughly impressed by the quality of service, low rates and enhanced calling features.

As with many people, I at first was a bit skeptical about using VoIP service. We all know there are always little quirks with new technology. Cheap calling rates for VoIP is what finally won me over, and enticed me to give it a try. In the beginning, there was no 911 service with my VoIP and it would drop calls from time to time.

Without exaggeration, VoIP has saved me around seven hundred dollars in phone service in 2005 in comparison to what I paid the previous year. Wow! Say that out loud, seven hundred dollars. Not only has the VoIP service saved me a ton of money, the quality of service has increased ten fold during the past year, including new 911 service.

One catch to VoIP is you need to have broadband Internet for VoIP to work. I had written several articles on this topic as well, and based on my own personal experiences. Fact is, the combined cost of broadband Internet such as DSL or cable broadband plus VoIP are cheaper than dial up plus traditional phone service, hands down and case closed.

What I paid for start up cost, and the very insignificant inconvenience of installing the telephone router a year ago are but a distant memory. I am very pleased with VoIP service and no longer have any use for a traditional phone line in my home. That’s right, no traditional phone companies for me, ever again.

VoIP is a product I highly recommend to anyone without hesitation. VoIP is a product which once installed people enjoy emencely. No more telemarketers trying to beat your long distance rates. No more hidden fee’s, taxes or expensive sir charges. As a customer of VoIP phone service I am indeed bias. In short, I love my VoIP phone service.

You finally made the switch to broadband phone service. The friendly neighborhood UPS guy just came by with the DTA adapter you’ll need to start using your new VoIP service. Soon the wheels in your head begin to turn as you realize your VoIP router is only connected to one telephone. You want VoIP phone service in your whole house, don’t you?

Getting wired for VoIP in your whole house is fairly simple. You don’t need a degree in rocket science, though it does take a bit more of a hands on approach than just letting the telephone company switch you over, but is also more rewarding. Along with a much cheaper phone bill, your friends will think you are some kind of computer genius.

Installing your VoIP system is really pretty easy, and for the most part all VoIP adapters install the same way. If you have a wireless network router, just think of your Internet connection as running from your modem, through your VoIP adapter first, then through your wireless router, and finally out to your computer. Consult your install guide.

If you do not have a wireless router, then your Internet connection comes from your cable, or DSL modem, through your VoIP adapter, and out to your computer. In either case, plug in your telephone line and finally power everything up. Be patient as this can take a few minutes to propagate the first time you connect. See your owners manual.

The easy way to get your whole home wired for VoIP is to buy a wireless whole house VoIP phone system with the VoIP router already built into the telephone. Broadband telephone companies like Packet8 offer these phones at a discount when you sign up for service and continue to sell additional compatible wireless handsets as needed.

Another approach is to run the phone cord from your VoIP adapter that would normally plug into your telephone, out to your network interface box outside, commonly referred to as the phone box. Unplug the phone companies line and plug in your own. This will connect all the phone jacks in your home to the VoIP Service.

When you wire your home for VoIP with the network interface box, make sure to put up a sign to insure the telephone company does not plug their line back in. If they do, it could damage your VoIP adapter. If you have a newer home, you may already be equipped with a system to connect your broadband phone service to the whole house.

Are you getting the best phone service for your hard-earned dollars? If you stayed on with whatever company got ?dibs? on your area when phone service was deregulated, you may be paying more than you need to. Businesses have learned that there is a lot of money to be saved by comparing phone services options and choosing carefully. Why should they get all the benefits? Take a look at your phone service bills from the past year. Take note whether your make more long distance calls or if local and/or toll calls take a bigger bite out of your budget. Knowing what kind of service you need is the first step in taking control of your phone service costs.

If your long distance phone service is costing you an arm and a leg, here?s a secret?you can make those calls for free. There?s a new technology called Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) that lets you make long distance calls over the Internet. Because the signal is not carried over land-lines operated by a phone service, the only charge you pay is your regular bill to your Internet service provider. To use VoIP instead of a traditional phone service, you must have a computer with broadband, or high-speed Internet access. The cost for this access may see high at first glance, but when you realize you save the money you would normally pay for long distance phone service, the true cost comes way down.

You can also use VoIP in place of your local phone service. One of the great things about VoIP is that you can save money using it even if the person you are calling only has regular phone service. Another way to save money on local phone service is to use a cellular phone instead of a land-line. This tactic takes a bit more consideration, because if you don?t have a good cellular service plan, using your cell instead of a local phone service can end up costing you more. Before you decide to shut off your regular phone service for good, be sure to crunch the numbers and make sure a cellular phone or VoIP is the best way to handle the number of local calls you make on a regular basis.

Voice over Internet Protocol calling makes good sense for most small businesses. Large business spend enough money on their phone service to work out the best deal, but many small businesses don?t have that clout. Using an alternative phone service is one way small businesses can put their profits where they do the most good.

VoIP is an abbreviation for voice over Internet protocol. It is easy to confuse VoIP with broadband phone service. Though broadband phone service uses the voice over Internet protocol to send and receive phone calls, it is not actually VoIP. As of now, VoIP basically comes in three forms, PC-to-PC, PC-to-Phone, and Broadband telephone service.

You may have used the most common PC-to-PC or PC-to-phone VoIP services without even realizing it. Have you ever used Yahoo Messenger to call someones computer? If you have, you’ve used Yahoo’s free PC-to-PC VoIP service. Additionally, Yahoo Messenger allows you to call someones home telephone from your computer for a small fee. This is called PC-to-Phone VoIP.

Broadband phone service also uses VoIP but allows you to make and receive calls on your home telephone the same way you always have. While PC-to-Phone, and PC-to-PC only require a software download to use the service, you’ll need a broadband phone adaptor to be able to use your home telephone with VoIP. Once installed, broadband phone service is very much like a traditional land line with just a few exceptions.

Now we know VoIP is the means of transmitting voice data over the Internet, and PC-to-Phone, PC-to-PC, or broadband telephone are the VoIP hardware and software solutions for VoIP. Armed with that information, which is the cheapest solution in VoIP for you? Free VoIP is not always the cheapest solution in VoIP. Let me explain.

As mentioned before, PC-to-PC VoIP is often times free with Popular Instant Messenger clients such as Yahoo Messenger, MSN Messenger, and now, Google Talk. These messengers provide an excellent free service which allows you to talk to friends and family over long distances through your home computer and speakers or headset.

What if you need to call someones home telephone or business phone? That’s where PC-to-Phone Voip comes in. PC-to-Phone allows you to call a telephone from your computer. Though PC-to-Phone isn’t free it’s very cheap, sometimes around 1 cent per minute or less. Examples of Popular PC-to-Phone VoIP services are offered by Yahoo Messenger and Skype.

Broadband telephone service allows you to make and receive phone calls without the aid of you’re computer. Broadband telephone is hyper popular since it cuts out the telcos and dramatically reduces your phone bill. Some VoIP companies offer unlimited local plus long distance calling for a flat fee of less than 20 dollars per month.

As with anything else, the cheapest solution for VoIP is going to be determined by your usage of the service. If using your computer to talk with your contacts does not bother you, by all means use PC-to-PC or PC-to-Phone. If you want to reduce your phone bill, and enjoy the convenience of talking on a normal phone, broadband telephone is going to be the cheapest solution in VoIP.
